We have seen a great upsurge in the consumption of energy drinks(monster, red bull, V, etc)over the last decade due to claims of boosted exercise performance, improved consentration, and mitigating fatigue. With this notable increase in consumption, we have observed a growing fear clouding energy drink due to the perceived dangerous side effects of substances such as caffine, quarana and taurine. Caffine consumed in high doses is related to negative cardiac outcomes including high heart rate, blood pressure, tremors, insomnia, and irritability. a large prospective study, for those under 60 years of age, those who drank more cups of coffee were less likely to be hospitalised and likely to develop cardiac arrhythmias.
TAURINE AND CARITINE-consumption is linked to overall positive health benefits on the cardiovascular system. these ingredients are even less likely than caffine to harm. Researchers even recommends supplementation of taurine and carnitine.
GUARANA- Similar effect to caffine on a lesser scale. the food and drug administration (FDA) classified as safe with no unhealthy limits set on intake.
DO ENERGY DRINKS CONTAIN ENOUGH CAFFINE THAT PUTS US AT RISK OF AN OVERDOSE ?
The answer is NO. According to a recent review paper, all commercial energy drinks fall within
the 400mg limit set by the food and drug administration (FDA) which is consider to
be safe and healthy for most adults. Monster contains 160 mg, red bull contains 80mg and
rockstar contains 160 mg which is less than daily limit.
ARE ENERGY DRINK BENEFICIAL ?
It is observed improved congnitive function for upto 6 hours following consumption of a single
energy drink. Another study saw that perceived vigour was improved and sensations of fatigue were lower following energy drink consumption. Also, a review paper concluded that energy drinks show positive effects on exercise performance in various sports activities.
We can conclude that the large majority of reported health hazards associated with energy drink consumption are due to either excess consumption of the drinks in a very short time or when they were consumed with other substances like alcohol or drugs. Thus, energy drinks appear to be safe when consumed moderately (less than 2 per day) and in isolation from other substances.
